Course Description
1. Introduction in the field of Byzantine Archeology. Periods of the Byzantine history. Introduction to Roman art and then the following fields are presented:
2. Public (secular and sacred) and private space and urban planning in Byzantine Empire.
3. Monumental Painting of the period 330-640
4. Monumental Painting of the period 640-843
5. Monumental Painting of the period 843-1204
6. Monumental Painting of the period 1204-1453.
7. Church and secular architecture of the period 330-843.
8. Church and secular architecture of the period 843-1204.
9. Church and secular architecture of the period 1204-1453.
10. Icons of the period 330-1453.
11. Illustrated manuscripts of the period 330-453.
12. Icons of the period 1453-1700.
13. Minor art, sculpture, ceramics and coinage during the Byzantine period are also briefly presented.

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
THE SCOPE OF THE COURSE AND OBJECTIVES
The Scope of the Course:
• Understanding and learning the main aspects of the Byzantine culture, focusing on the changes between the periods of Byzantine art and archaeology (early-middle-late).

Course objectives:
The main learning objectives of the course are the following:
• Understanding and learning basic typology, terminology and history of the distinctive fields of the Byzantine art and archaeology (monumental painting, architecture and urban planning, icons, illustrated manuscripts, ceramics, coinage and minor arts).
• Understanding and learning the aesthetics of Byzantine art.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT
Language of evaluation: Greek
Students’ evaluation (100%): Written exams on:
-Development of special topics of the subject
-Critical questions and open-ended questions.
