Course Description

Course Theory

The course develops a series of modules that address numerous topics. Not to delve into individual problems, the course focuses on developing the capacity of students: To tackle problems and conservation requirements as a whole rather than for individual or specific cases. To be able to distinguish between mass and individual interventions. It describes the organization of mass conservation interventions so as to benefit and protect the greatest possible number of objects, and the organization individual conservation interventions to be implemented on a limited scale. To establish criteria for selected specific materials, techniques and methods of treatments. To describe the characteristics and qualities, which materials are required to have for the interventions. To describe the features offered to the conservators, in order to apply certain methods, but also to define the limits which are set both technologically and ethically.

Course Practicals

The laboratory part of the course includes a series of exercises to assess the different situations. For students to develop skills and  to gain experience by coming in contact of different case studies so as for them to gain the needed skills and critical thinking to  select and implement specific interventions for conservation.

 

The Scope of the Course and Objectives

The Scope of the Course

It is the students understand: 1) the variety of the objects that constitute Library and Archival collections, 2) the different materials (in terms of chemical composition) and the interaction of the materials involved in their manufacture (papyrus, parchment, handmade paper, industrial paper, carbon black inks, printing inks, irongall inks, modern inks, printing techniques, bookbinding cloth, leather, cardboard, wood, metal furniture etc.) and their behavior under different environmental conditions, 3) the longevity of certain materials and the changes in their construction during the industrial and post-industrial periods, 4) the necessity to evaluate real and complex situations so as to highlight  the main factors  for selecting the necessary conservation treatments.

Course objectives

For the students to develop  the necessary knowledge and skills in the practical application of the treatments on Library and archival collections.

STUDENT ASSESSMENT Students are assessed in Greek Language, and Erasmus students in English. The student’s final grade results from 60% of the grade of the theoretical part and 40% of the grade of laboratory practice.

Students’ evaluation (100%): THEORY (60%): Written assessment with short answer questions or multiple choice. LAB PRACTICES (40%): Written assignment with defined evaluation criteria announced to students at the beginning of the semester.
