Course Description
Course Theory
Introduction to panel paintings (any painted work of art on hardboard panel). Construction methods and materials: crossbeams, panel board/s, primer layers, gilding, paint layers, coatings (varnishes). Damage morphology: injury and decay types across stratigraphy of panel paintings. Influence of environmental and biological factors, improper construction, mistreatments, recent conservation treatments in the current preservation state of panel paintings. Treatments and conservation materials. Conservation and/or restoration of crossbeams and panel board/s, disinfection, disinfestation, consolidation, repletion techniques / consolidation of primer, gilding and paint layers. Selective removal of soiling, degraded varnishes and overpaints with organic solvents, buffered solutions, surfactants, soaps, detergents, chelates, enzymes in the form of liquid solutions, gels and emulsions. Laser cleaning techniques. Retouching. Detachment methods of painted surfaces from panel boards, separation techniques of valuable overpaints from older painted surface.
Course Practicals
The laboratory part of the course includes exercises for: documentation of the preservation state of panel paintings; surveying different types of injury / decay; state-of-the-art conservation applications for panel paintings including: disinfection and disinfestation of the wooden parts (crossbeams and panel boards); consolidation and repletion of wooden parts; consolidation of primer, gilding and paint layers; selective removal of particle soils, soot and stains of wax, limewash, insect excretion and diffused rust scrapings of metal studs; selective removal of coatings; selective removal of overpaints; detachment of painted surfaces from decayed panels; separation of valuable overpaints from older painted surface; and retouching of the painted surface. – Panel paintings are provided to the students in order to apply conservation techniques, as taught throughout the course.
Expected Learning Outcomes
Students should be able to:
Distinguish injuries and deteriorations to the components in the sublayers across the stratigraphy of panel paintings.
Document, compile and propose a conservation program for panel paintings
Set the standards for the selection of materials and methods for all treatements required and to design a conservation methodology.
Select, document and execute a conservation or restoration application on panel paintings.
Propose the optimum procedure for the separation of a painted surface from an older paint and/or from the panel board/s.
Understand the grounds and assess the results after the conservation of a panel painting.
The Scope of the Course and Objectives
The Scope of the Course:
To provide students the specialization of panel painting conservation.
Course objectives:
The training of students on methods of preservation and conservation of panel paintings.
STUDENT ASSESSMENT
Language of evaluation: Greek (English for Erasmus students).
The student’s final grade results from 50% of the grade of the theoretical part and 50% of the grade of laboratory practice.
Students’ evaluation (100%):
THEORY (50%): written examination with a mixed questionnaire (open-ended & multiple choice questions).
LAB PRACTICES (50%): Evaluation of the submitted technical reports & inter-course performance evaluation.
