The Scope of the Course:

The course aims in the analysis of the measuring survey techniques, as well as in the documentation of artifacts and archaeological findings, by means of either analogue techniques, or with the use of specialized equipment, and also in the methodology to be followed during the measuring process.
In addition, it includes an introduction to the basic analogue and digital techniques and drafting means, to the 2dimentional drafting and representation of relevant details, as well to the photographic documentation and modeling of the artifacts and works of archaeological findings.
Consequently, the use of Information and Communication Technologies is applied for the survey and digital modeling of works of art and buildings, by means of relevant software, aiming to the measuring survey and the documentation of objects and monuments.
Relevant terms and methodologies, such as the digital documentation and the creation of a 2 dimensional model through computer aided software, are also included.
Students select an object presenting cultural interest (approximately 20-30 cm in scale 1:1) with relevant decay and an object-archaeological finding, located in various archaeological sites, in the National Archaeological Museums of Athens and other Museums. The relevant material is provided to students, forming a wide selection of various Classical period marble burial tombstones, depicting noticeable deformations in the overall shape of the tombstone, as well as in the depiction of the human figures, which are presented.
Τhe selected assignments’ topics include the knowledge and creation of combining digital environment, and the elaboration of digital models.
Application of computer aided software for the measuring survey documentation through related assignments.

Thematic fields (13 teaching weeks)
1. Αrchitectural – drafting measuring survey. Methodology applied, tools, case studies.
2. Lecture on the importance of sketching / drafting techniques during the measuring survey. Case studies.
3. Presentation of the 1st assignment. Selection of related objects. Individual student work.
4. Lecture on the design process as a working tool for the representation and data recording. Case studies.
5. Revision of assignments. Evaluation and grading.
6. Lecture on the submitted material at a comparative basis.
7. Presentation of the 2nd assignment. Selection of related archaeological artifacts. Individual student work. Revision of Αassignments. Documentation of the decay and the overall deformation.
8. Α Revision of assignments. Evaluation and grading.
9. Presentation of the 3nd assignment. Lecture on the downloading and use of the computer aided drawing software.
10. Elaboration of the 2nd assignment by means of CAD. Revision of assignments.
11. Elaboration of the 2nd assignment by means of CAD. Revision of assignments.
12. Elaboration of the 2nd assignment by means of CAD. Revision of assignments.
13. Final submission and grading.

Course Practicals

The Scope of the Course and Objectives
Τhe course consists the basic introductory course on the surveys of artifacts and buildings, in order to collect and record relevant information needed for the diagnose of the pathology and the documentation of the existing state of the monuments.

Expected Learning Outcomes:
After the completion of the course the students will be able to:
• Apply different analogue and digital measuring survey mapping techniques.
• Plan the work flow during the in-situ survey works.
• Record the different materials composing the structure of a historic monument or object of cultural, artistic, historic value.
• Document the pathology/decay of the materials,
• Obtain digital capacities in the use of computer aided software (Autocad), for the representation of the pathology of the archaeological artifact.
• Use the classic documentary photography as a means of recording / mapping.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE EVALUATION
Language of evaluation is Greek and English for Erasmus students

Students’ evaluation (100%):
Submission of 3 Assignments:
•Two assignments regarding the documentation of decay and the survey plans of i. an object of significant cultural interest, as well as ii. An archaeological survey findings’ item/artifact, both to be documented in a selected scale (80%)
•One assignment, which will elaborate the results of assignment 2, by means of Two-dimensional (2D) CAD drawings (20%).
